Through pages 66-76, Elie has many difficulties going on with obviously the camp, with his belief in God and the selections. The selections is when the Jews have to run in line, they aren't aloud to walk because it will show Dr. Mengele that you are weak and can not continue to work, while the SS officers and Dr. Mengele write down the strong and the weak. Elie was safe from selections but they decided to have another selection which his father was apart of. While Elie was marching to the next camp, he was thinking if he was going to see his father at the next camp or not. His father gave him a knife and a spoon just in case his father wasn't by his side at the next camp. Thank God, Elie got the chance to give his father back his knife and spoon. He was safe from the second selection.
Winter came and was very troubling for Elie continuing to work. Later on, Elie's foot got swollen and he had to go to the infirmary. He was quickly put into surgery. He was okay to go back to work two weeks later. Two days after his surgery the Russians were coming to the camps and the had to evacuate quickly from the camp. The Jews that were in the infirmary either goes with the other Jews to atleast see another day or stay in the infirmary to die. Elie ran out to stay safe with his father. While marching, Elie's foot started bleeding and could see his blood on the snow. While in their bunks, Elie wrapped his foot with a cloth and did what the SS officer had told everybody to do. To catch up on their sleep. At the end of this section, everybody was assigned new blocks and had to leave quickly.
